North Tacoma Fire

Giant plumes of smoke rising over North Tacoma summoned dozens of area residents to the 4200 block of North Orchard Street where a garage fire raged out of control for several minutes. Surrounding structures caught fire as well. The photos below show the garage fire as well as the adjacent home beginning to go up in flames. Our local fire department got a handle on the situation while police officers kept the growing assembly of neighbors away from the fire. There were at least 2 audible explosions during the incident. This should serve as a strong reminder to everyone that fire season is upon us. For more on the fire, take a look at additional photos and video from the scene.

Espresso Stand in front of Dave's Meat & Produce Closed

The coffee stand in front of Dave's Meat & Produce appears to have closed their window. Perhaps it will be reopening soon? Today's coffee market seems cutthroat, and not having a drive-thru or a big name on the sign would seemingly make it difficult to compete.

University of Washington Huskies, 2009 National Champions of Softball

Danielle Lawrie. That's the name you'll remember several years from now, long after the dust from the World Series of college softball has settled. The 2009 Player of the Year may be a husky, but the team rode her like a horse all year, continuing right on through the postseason and off into the sunset in Oklahoma City. By beating the top ranked Florida Gators 2-0 in a best of 3 series, the Washington Huskies became softball National Champs for the first time in school history. The 3rd ranked Huskies made their first tournament appearance in 10 years.
