9/29/09 Another Last-Minute Favre Comeback
AP - You've got to be kidding me. Brett Favre is on my fantasy team and so I'm rooting for another one of his miracle comebacks. Wouldn't you know it?! It happened! No less, the wonders culminated in a long bomb deep to the back line of the endzone. Tap dance, ballet-style catch and all. What a rush. I have a feeling Minnesota is in for a nice ride this year.9/2/09 Grunge Awarded Best Music Genre of 20th Century
AP - Pearl Jam, Soundgarden, Mother Love Bone, Smashing Pumpkins, Temple of the Dog, Nirvana, Alice In Chains, Mudhoney, Seaweed, Green River, Screaming Trees, Hole, Gruntruck, Floater.. The list goes on and on, but this should give you a pretty good reminder of what the 90's brought us. A new kind of music and its ensuing fashion craze took the nation by storm. Someone called it Grunge.Long underwear, Doc Martens, flannel shirts and anything considered drab and non-glam was suddenly en vogue. Both grunge music and grunge fashion originated as an equal, opposite force to the 80's glam rock scene. Glam took 70's musicianship and added a bit more of a "hey, check me out!" mentality - cheesy solos, groupies, and a ton of men in makeup. Grunge took glam and threw it off a cliff. It has often been said that Nirvana's "Smells Like Teen Spirit" singlehandedly ended the glam era. Simple, non-refined guitar driven melodies, layered over thought-provoking narratives became the new standard. The focus returned to the collective sound of the entire band and it became less about the individuals. The fashion grew in popularity, almost by accident. Motion picture sensation Singles, together with the meteoric rise of the big 4 bands from Seattle, exposed the world to a new look and feel. It spread like wildfire. It arrived as "alternative" and continued to be labeled as such, although it became incredibly mainstream in less than 6 months. 9/1/09 Snow Leopard: Explained
AP - This is for those of you who keep seeing Snow Leopard everywhere but don't know what it is. Snow Leopard is the name of the new computer operating system from Apple computers. When I first heard it, I thought it sounded more like a special ops mission than anything to do with computers, but this is nothing new for me and Apple.Simply, Snow Leopard is to 2009 as "tweet" is to 2008. You can't help but smile when you hear these words, but not in a good way. 8/27/09 DJ AM Victim of Lethal Drug Combination
AP - He survived a plane crash but he couldn't survive the aftermath. After recovering from his injuries, DJ AM was prescribed anti-anxiety meds which, in conjunction with crack cocaine, led to his death. His good friend Travis Barker was severely burned in the same plane crash, and 4 others perished. The ordeal created a probable phobia of flying, and his professional life required frequent travel which became too much. Herein lies the need for the Xanax and other prescriptions of similar nature. 8/22/09 Plaxico Burress' Future Is Shot
AP - I understand that what he did was wrong, but incarcerating Plaxico Burress for over a year in a federal prison for accidentally shooting himself in the leg seems like an awful use of federal resources. He will sit in prison, contributing nothing to society while tax dollars pay for his stay. He's a professional athlete - a multi-millionaire with a lot to give to the community, children, disadvantaged youth, etc. It is a crying shame not to use his celebrity for something positive. He's a good guy that made a horrible mistake. He should pay a penalty but prison is not the appropriate punishment. The gun went off accidentally in his pocket in a nightclub. He shot HIMSELF. Nobody else was hurt. Thieves and violent criminals often do less time than Plaxico is slated to do. I find this to be a disgrace to our justice system and a slap in the face to federal budgets and organizations who could really benefit from his community service. He has so much potential to give back something positive during this tough time, and instead he will be tossed into prison, costing significant tax dollars. I think the troubled kids of New York need him more than the inmates do. Lawyers, judges, and the legal system in general are failing us daily and nothing seems to change because most people drawn to work in this segment of our society have their heads so far up their ass, they could snack on last night's supper. I hope I never end up on the stand in court because my contempt will resonate uncontrollably and I will likely end up with community service. And no troubled kids will give a shit about meeting me. 8/19/09 Michael Jackson Very Busy Today
AP - Michael Jackson's doctor is rumored to be arrested and charged with manslaughter. This should go down in the next 2 weeks. Meanwhile they are acting on more search warrants and trying to gather more evidence before the arrest.Michael Jackson's family will be paying the city's costs for his memorial. Thousands of people required extensive security and other city resources. Lastly, one of 5 Andy Warhol portraits of Michael Jackson is going up for auction. This is the latest in a string of MJ memoribilia sales since his death. Addendum 8/24/09: Michael Jackson's attorney is now being charged with homicide instead of manslaughter. This implies that the doctor directly administered the fatal dose of the medication(s) that killed the King of Pop. Additionally, it is now believed that the doctor lied during his interviews with the authorities regarding the events immediately before and after Michael Jackson stopped breathing. Reportedly, the doctor's original story about his actions during these critical moments contradicts information gathered from cell phone reports. 8/19/09 Michelle Obama, American Women Say 'Yes' To Shorts
AP - There is no place in this world for staunch conservatism. Criticism against Michelle Obama for wearing shorts is the obvious, odd gossip of the day today. Maybe we can be more like Arab nations? Maybe we can ask our first lady to cover her head and neck with a burqa or a
nice hijab or something?Give me a break, people. It wasn't as if she showed up to a fancy dinner in shorts. With all the things our 12 year old girls are wearing to school in this country, outrage over a pair of run-of-the-mill shorts is just completely ridiculous. I think the religious right needs to calm down and find another story to focus their attention. 8/18/09 Brett Favre Should Stay Retired
AP - Like many professional athletes, Brett Favre can't seem to figure out when to say when. His football legacy is certainly going to be
tarnished in my book. Skipping training camp is bush league and could set a nasty precedent for other free agent veterans who feel like continuing
to collect a paycheck, without working hard in training camp.I'll be rooting for the Packers to whip the Vikings this year. I am a Seattle Seahawks fan, so seeing Steve Hutchinson and Brett Favre on the same offense makes me want to vomit on my shoes. Adrian Peterson is probably the happiest guy in the NFL today! I may have to pick him up in my Fantasy Football auction draft on Labor Day. I suppose this strategy will be widely implemented! Brett Favre and Adrian Peterson will provide each other with a great deal of protection. |
