STEVE CARELL IS JUST NOT THAT FUNNY.

  ITAOT 3.31.07
There. I said it. Your jaw probably dropped; you can't believe your eyes. Perhaps you already knew that the phrase "Steve Carell is just not that funny" does NOT exist anywhere on the internet? So says the Google search index, as of the time of this writing. Let me be the first person in the world to deny The Office "funniest show ever" accolades. And, god help me for suggesting: Steve Carell is just not that funny.
I've tried to entice you, the Tacoma public, to write something for this column, but I have failed miserably, time and time again. Last night it was brought to my attention that I may be the only person on Earth with this opinion. At first I was a little frustrated with a small group of friends who seem so mesmerized with this apparent comic genius. Then it occurred to me, this might just be the controversial angle I've been waiting for!
The irony here is that I love politically incorrect comedy, dry humor and parodies of work

situations. I just don't love Steve Carell. Perhaps, because Steve Carell is just not that funny? Perhaps.
No matter this truth, or lack thereof; nobody can take away the fact that this is a first descent. My revolutionary take will persevere, aglow on monitors across the globe. One day, when everyone else grows tired of his schtick, I will appear the great visionary. Oh, how I long for this day. Until then, I can only draw comparison of Carell to Austin Powers' inability to bring the funny.
May I have the strength to continue on my path amid prevalent, aggravated ideological opposition. Maybe we can all agree to be proud to have this controversy originate in Tacoma, Washington? As Tacoma is often slandered, she finally earns dignity. Cutting edge thinking is appropriately leaking from the City of Destiny yet again, and there's no telling where it may lead us.

Thank you! I thought I was the only person on Earth that felt this way... until I Googled "Steve Carrell is not funny" and found your editorial. I get so annoyed with people praising The Office when it does not hold a light up to Gervais's David Brent. I went into 40- year old Virgin expecting a good time... I didn't laugh once. I thought I was going crazy. People around we were laughing hysterically at his chest hair being pulled out. What the heck is so funny about that? So what, he yelled "Kelly Clarkson!" while it happened. He's not a natural, and always comes off like he's acting, or trying too hard to be funny. Will Ferrell popularity I understand. Steve Carrell... I just don't get it.

I found you because we are watching 'The Office' here at work because we have to use a clip in an Emmy spot we're working on. I'm in entertainment advertising. And I agree with you. He just isn't funny. I've got a friend who IS funny and also thinks this guy sucks. The only funny thing he ever did was the poster for the movie '40 Year Old Virgin.' Then the movie sucked.

Thank you thank you thank for your piece about Steve Carell not being funny. I can't believe The Office is still on the air. I'm glad Evan AlCrappy flopped. I like the British version of The Office, because Ricky Gervais is funny, and STEVE CARELL IS NOT. I don't understand his hype and acclaim either. When The Office started it ran about 6 episodes that I watched because I used to live where it takes place (Scranton, PA). When it stopped for a bit I thought it was rightfully cancelled. I was unfortunately wrong. He is so predictable and talentless.

THANKS!

Thank god I am not alone. There is someone else out there who sees the light. I actually put 'Steve Carell is not funny' into Google because I was so intrigued(desperate) to see if I was the only comically sane person out there. I have been insisting to friends, family, acquaintances....that Steve Carell is one of the least funny comedians/comic actors out there. I just don't get it, and I consider myself a huge movie buff - comedy, drama, all genres. He was the worst thing about 40 Year-Old Virgin. Steve Carell is lame. I almost want to start a campaign to wake people up to this reality.

Thanks,

SEAWEED IN TACOMA

  AP 7.24.07
With Bumbershoot just up ahead, it's time to prepare. All members of the band Seaweed have converged on the City of Destiny, as it is time to practice for the big show on Sunday September 2nd. If you happen to be at Bumbershoot on Sunday, stick around for the late show. You won't have to work Monday (Labor Day) so you won't be in any hurry to get home. Seaweed plays the Sky Church inside EMP at 9:30pm.
Every Seaweed show I've seen has delivered exactly what I was looking for: high energy, a sonic wave of dual guitars and mashing vocals. It can drive crowds wild. I don't see why it will be any different in September. Even if a lot of us fans are, um, getting a little long in the tooth, we should be able to bring it.
Seaweed was a part of perhaps the most memorable show of my life. Back in late 1991, Pearl Jam played Drop In The Park at Magnuson Park in Seattle. It was a free show, requiring dozens of city buses and scores of security. Pearl Jam was the hottest band on the planet at the time and, needless to say, the whole thing was a very big deal if you lived around here.
Many people probably don't remember that the soon-to-be-huge Cypress Hill also graced the stage that day. I had never heard of them before, and was increasingly amused by their soaring rise to popularity that would follow in coming months. On a platform of marijuana, jokes about security, and more marijuana, who could refuse their charm?
Where were we? Oh yeah, the Seaweed reunion. I also love to remind people that Pearl Jam chose

Seaweed not once, but twice, as the opener for the free show they wanted to play in Seattle. The first time around, a free show at Gasworks Park was nixed before it ever got out of the planning stages, due to the city fearing security and traffic issues. A year or so later, the plan was set, and Seaweed was again on the list. I was always curious of the dedication Pearl Jam showed to Seaweed being a part of this significant event for the region.
Anyone watch the movie Clerks lately? Remember the Fleetwood Mac cover of Go Your Own Way? That was another great milestone for the band that emerged from my stomping grounds. And again, I fostered some sort of bastard pride as they continued their ascent into the annals of music history.
Keep your eyes peeled for the practice location this week. I'll expect nothing less than an email if someone should spot the band around town over the next couple days. Especially if Beavis or Butthead should happen to be with them.

SEAWEED UPDATE - NEW ALBUM EXPECTED

  AP 4.14.07
Anyone wondering what the Tacoma band Seaweed has brewing? You can now rest assured that this summer's Bumbershoot appearance is a lock. I am hearing that the potential Capitol Hill Street Fair show is out, however.
With the band members scattered across the U.S. it has been awhile since they've gotten together to play music. Says one member, it will be an experience just getting back into that groove of the old songs and fellow musicians. Bring in new girlfriends, wives, kids, etc. and you have quite a new dynamic about to sprout some legs.

Actions and Indications :

My source is saying that the band is now planning on hitting the studio for some recording in the not so distant future. This bodes well for them - as I have previously stated, their music may reach a new audience of grand proportions. I'm not sure who is putting out this album, but with proper production and promotion, we may have a full-fledged 2nd go-round in the making.

SEAWEED, ANYONE?

   3.12.07
AP - As was first reported last month by O&A, the rebirth of Seaweed looks to now be imminent. That's right all you bloggers, get out your pens.. Tacoma's predecessors to the grunge revolution have a date with Bumbershoot and the Capitol Hill Street Fair, both going on this summer. Barring an unforeseen turnaround of unknown origin, these shows are happening, and I, for one, am damn glad to hear it.
A classic Beavis & Butthead episode, a song on the Clerks soundtrack, and shows with Pearl Jam and Green Day are just a part of their impressive resume dating back to the late 80's. I'll never forget the first time I saw the Seaweed video for "Kid Candy" on MTV - for those of you who missed it, the brilliant bit was filmed in Old Western State. This video will stand as the finest footage to ever be mass-produced on location at said looney bin.

For this reason alone, you should want to catch both of their upcoming shows
Grab your piece of history, for we shall not know the extent of this "reunion tour" for many months to come. Despite the time away from their band, a new album wouldn't be a terrible idea. After a quick conversation on the phone with a Seaweed guitarist last week, I get the feeling that they don't even know what to expect. Here's my take: another album by Seaweed could likely find a much wider audience than any of us may have ever dreamt back in the halls of Hudtloff Junior High. Just a hunch.
